Kirsten Haglund
Farminton Hills, Michigan
In 2008, 19- year-old Kirsten Haglund, a native of Farmington Hills, Michigan and a student at the University of Cincinnati, won over the judges and captured the title of Miss America 2008 in Las Vegas. During her year of service she promoted her platform of Raising Awareness of Eating Disorders by speaking about her personal battle with Anorexia Nervosa.
She teamed up with the Eating Disorders Coalition to lobby Congress on the Mental Health Parity Act, which passed at the end of her year. She continues to promote her personal platform as she raises funds for her own non-profit organization, the Kirsten Haglund Foundation, which provides hope, networking, and financial aid to those seeking treatment and freedom from eating disorders. Kirsten is now enjoying creating a new life in Los Angeles, California.
Since January, she has continued on the speaking circuit advocating for Eating Disorders awareness, spoke internationally at hospitals and universities in Stuttgart, Germany in October, and lobbied again for the passage of the FREED Bill in Washington D.C. in September. She also is continuing fundraising efforts for the Kirsten Haglund Foundation, which she founded in February, to provide treatment scholarships for families and individuals seeking treatment for eating disorders. She has continued her acting training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in LA, and is pursuing her career in entertainment through print modeling, commercial work and theatrical (TV and film). She appeared as Nichole in the short film, "Caroline and Randy," and has several exciting upcoming projects!
